Located between the coasts of Paestum and Policastro and between the Alburni mountains and Vallo di Diano, Cilento is an important tourist area of southern Italy, in the southern part of the Province of Salerno.

In 1991, to protect the territory, was instituted a national park, and in 1998 the park became a World Heritage Site of UNESCO.
Cilento is steeped in Greek mythology and legends., like the remains of the colonies of Velia, where was also the seat of Eleatics school, and Paestum (ancient Poseidonia), with their three ancient Greek temples in the Doric order.
